Purdue Boilermakers vs Tennessee Volunteers Form & Stats

Purdue Boilermakers vs Tennessee Volunteers is set for Thursday March 28 at KFC Yum Center, Louisville, KY. The winner progresses through to the Elite 8 of the National Tournament.

In the South Region, these teams have been no part of any upsets, as #2 seed Tennessee is the slight betting favorite facing #3 seed Purdue in the Sweet 16 game.

Purdue has won both of their Big Dance games by double figures and in their last game they laid an 87-61 beat down on defending champion Villanova. They had lost two of their last three games of the regular season, but the team has looked impressive in their two tourney games.

On the season, the Boilermakers were led by a solid defense and that has not changed in their last two games where they have not given up more than 61 points in either.

Tennessee has had a tougher time getting to the Sweet 16 and they needed to win in OT in their last game facing 10th seed Iowa. The Volunteers were the top-ranked team in the nation for a while this season and they have a good defense and they rank 20th in the nation in points per game.

The Boilermakers have yet to allow any of their Big Dance opponents to shoot over 38% from the floor. In their 87-61 drubbing of Villanova in their last game they held the Wildcats to 34.5% shooting while they shot 53.7% and jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead.

On the season Purdue has only two players averaging in double figures with the key player being Carsen Edwards averaging 23.6 ppg. He blew up for 42 points in the win over Villanova and had 26 points in the first-round game. Ryan Cline is averaging 11.7 ppg on the season and has scored at least 12 points in his last two games.

Tennessee showed they had grit in their last game beating Iowa 83-77 in OT. They dominated the first half outscoring the Hawkeyes by 21 points, but then were outscored by 21 points in the second half. However, in the OT they outscored Iowa 12-6 and for the game they shot a much better FG% (46.7% to 39%), but they were sloppy with the rock committing 17 turnovers.

The Volunteers have two future NBA high draft picks in Grant Williams (19 ppg 7.6 rpg) and Admiral Schofield (16.3 ppg 6.1 rpg). Each player had 19 points in the win over Iowa after each failed to score in double figures in their previous game and Jordan Bone (13.5 ppg) has scored 30 points in the two tourney games.

Purdue has not received much press coverage this season, even though they are a legit team from the tough Big 10. They will get some ink in this game after they take apart Tennessee.

The Volunteers have not looked good in their first two games and they will not look good in this one. Purdue will turn on the defense for the third time in a row and cover the spread, advancing to the Elite 8.
