Boston College Eagles Form

After being routed on Saturday night at Clemson, 59-7, as a 34-point underdog, the BC Eagles hit the road again with the hopes of staying in contention for a bowl game.

The loss to Clemson was the most lopsided final score BC has suffered under head coach Steve Addazio.

At 4-4, the Eagles will likely have to win two of their final four games, but that won’t be easy since three of those final games are on the road. That includes this week’s trip to upstate New York.

The BC offense is led by a running game that ranks second in the ACC, behind only Clemson, with 255.6 yards per game and 5.1 yards per carry.

AJ Dillon became the school’s all-time leading rusher with 76 yards rushing against Clemson and now has 3,741 yards on the ground in his storied career.

The bad news for the Eagles is their passing game ranks 12th in the ACC with just 199 yards per game. Two weeks ago, the team lost starting QB Anthony Brown to a knee injury for the season.

In his place, walk-on Dennis Grosel looked overwhelmed at Clemson, completing just 3 of 14 passes for 53 yards.

BC ranks dead last in the ACC in total defense. The team is allowing opponents a whopping 6.4 yards per carry and 487.1 total yards per game.

Despite the weak W-L record, the Eagles are 5-3 against the spread and had covered four in a row before getting blitzed by Clemson last week.

Syracuse Orangemen Form

On the other side of the field, Dino Baber’s Syracuse team is also in the midst of a very disappointing season. The Orange began the season ranked in the Top 25, but have gone a dismal 0-4 in the ACC and 3-5 overall.

Syracuse, which has lost its last three games both straight up and against the spread, has missed graduated QB Eric Dungey dearly.

The team’s scoring has dropped 17 points from last year, when it averaged 40 points per game.

The offensive line has struggled all season, allowing 42 sacks, the most by any FBS school this season.

Penalties have also been a major sore spot for The Orange this season. Their 14-penalty performance during last week’s loss to Florida State puts the team second-to-last nationally in that category.

The Orange have the 12th-ranked rushing offense in the ACC and the ninth-ranked passing offense.

The defense has been able to keep the team in games, but seems to be wearing down after giving up a combined 62 points and 386 yards rushing the last two weeks to Florida State and Pittsburgh.

Boston College vs Syracuse Head-to-Head

Syracuse leads the all-time series between these two former Big East Conference foes, 31-20.

The Orange have also won three of the last four meetings, but the road team has earned a victory the last two years in blowout fashion.

In 2017, BC won 42-14 as a 4-point road dog while last year The Cuse went to BC and left with a convincing 42-21 win as a field goal underdog.

Boston College vs Syracuse College Football Predictions

The Eagles didn’t appear to belong on the same field as Clemson last week, and they didn’t.

But the good news for BC this week is that Syracuse is not even close to the level of Clemson and things are rapidly coming apart for the Orangemen. Therefore, it looks to us like the wrong team is favored here.

BC’s rush offense will have its way against an Orange stop unit that ranks eighth in the ACC in rushing defense, but has yet to face a top running team.

Before the Clemson debacle, BC was playing hard, covering four in a row, and under Addazio this is a team that has bounced back very well after a loss.

BC is 3-0 ATS this season in that situation, and 4-0 ATS the last three seasons the week after giving up 37 points or more.

Take the points.
