Iowa State Cyclones Form
The expectations were high for the Cyclones entering the 2019 campaign, but so far the results have been topsy-turvy.
Yes, the team is coming off its most impressive effort of the young season after drilling TCU at home on Saturday, 49-24, as a three-point favorite. But, that only improved the Cyclones to 3-2 for the season, after disappointing losses.
One came to Baylor, 23-21, as a two-point favorite and in-state rival Iowa, 18-17, as a one-point chalk.
The good news for ISU is that the offense is clicking and is one of seven Big 12 schools to rank in the Top 35 in the country for total offense, averaging 487.2 yards per game, good for 15th in the country.
Iowa State is also 8-0 in the month of October during the last three seasons, joining Alabama as the only conference teams to remain unblemished during that span.
West Virginia Mountaineers Form
Unlike Iowa State, West Virginia entered this season without any lofty expectations as it looked to replace a slew of starters and break in a first-year head coach in Neal Brown.
But, except for a Week 2 blowout loss at Missouri, the team has competed hard in every game, especially last week when it nearly upset Texas as a 10-point underdog in an eventual 42-31 loss.
The loss dropped the Mountaineers to 3-2 with the most impressive victory coming on Sept. 14 when they upset NC State, 44-27, as a seven-point underdog.
While the team ranks just 88th in the country in scoring offense, it has improved greatly in recent weeks.
After scoring just 27 points in the first two games of the season, the WVU offense has averaged 34.7 points per game the last three weeks, despite losing the turnover battle in those games 6-0.
Iowa State vs. West Virginia Head-to-Head
Last year, the Mountaineers went to Ames undefeated and favored by 5.5 points, but the Cyclones sent them home with a 30-14 loss.
In the last meeting in Morgantown back in 2017, West Virginia won a close 20-16 decision as a three-point favorite.
The last three meetings between these two schools have gone under the betting total.
Iowa State vs. West Virginia Picks
While some may think that last week’s dominating win was a turning point for Iowa State, we’re not ready to buy in just yet.
Despite playing four of its five games at home, the Cyclones have not be overly impressive and in the one game they had to go on the road they got walloped by Baylor.
West Virginia is never an easy place to get to or to play in and with the game being moved to a 4 p.m. EST start to accommodate the ESPN cameras, you can be sure the crowd will be spitting fire.
We’re going to take the double-digit home dog and bank on the Mountaineer offense to continue to improve and keep the team in the game until the final minutes.
