Penn State Nittany Lions Form

Penn State is 5-0 for the first time since 2017 and it has done so in impressive fashion, with a scoring margin of +31.5 points per game, which ranks fourth in the country.

The defense has been outstanding, allowing only seven points since halftime of a Week 3 win over Pitt, a span of 10 quarters.

Penn State ranks second in the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 7.5 points per game, while also leading the country with an average of five sacks per game.

Offensively, Penn State has the Big 10’s best passing offense, averaging 305.6 yards per game with new starting quarterback Sean Clifford under center.

All of these numbers, however, should be cautioned by the fact that Penn State’s schedule of opponents thus far has not been strong and Iowa will be the first ranked team it has faced this season.

Iowa Hawkeyes Form

Iowa brought an unblemished 4-0 record into Michigan last week, but went home 4-1 after getting completely stymied in a 10-3 loss to the Wolverines as a 4.5-point underdog.

In the loss, the Hawkeyes running game was limited to one single net yard on 30 attempts while they turned the ball over four times. Prior to that game, Iowa was averaging 33.5 points per game during the 4-0 start.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes have been nearly as suffocating as Penn State. The team has yet to allow more than 17 points in a game, and overall is giving up just 8.8 points per game.

Penn State vs. Iowa Head-to-Head

Penn State has won five straight games (4-1 ATS) in the series and a win on Saturday will result in the longest streak for either team in the series.

Each of the last two meetings have been decided by less than one score, with Penn State winning at home last year 30-24 as a five-point favorite. 21-19 was the score two years ago in Iowa as a 12.5-point chalk.

Penn State vs. Iowa Betting Trends

  • Penn State are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 following an ATS loss.
  • Iowa are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
  • Penn State are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 following an ATS loss.
  • Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

Penn State vs. Iowa Picks

Obviously, the Nittany Lions have a huge advantage offensively in this game, but we simply can not go against Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz at home where the Hawkeyes have gone 10-6 against the spread in their last 16.

The Hawkeyes defense is up to the challenge and will force some costly mistakes from Penn State QB Clifford, who will be making his first road start in a hostile environment.
