Penn State Nittany Lions Form

While both of these teams have been impressive by sprinting out to 8-0 starts, the Nittany Lions have done so against a much tougher schedule.

Over the last three weeks, Penn State beat and covered the spread against Iowa and Michigan State on the road. Sandwiched between a home win over Michigan in which it won, 28-21, but failed to cover as an 8-point chalk.

The Nittany Lions rank second in the Big 10 in scoring offense with over 35 points per game. They are third in the conference in passing offense with 252 yards per game.

They have managed to put up these numbers despite playing some top-notch competition. Minnesota will be the sixth team ranked in the top 20 for total defense that the Nittany Lions have faced this season.

But the main reason for success at Penn State this season has been the defense that is allowing just 9.6 points per game. That ranks second in the Big 10 behind Ohio State, and 280 yards per game, which is fifth-best.

The rush defense has been incredibly stingy. Penn State has held six of its eight opponents to 80 yards or less on the ground. For the season it is only allowing an average of 68.4 rushing yards per game, which is best in the Big 10.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Form

Minnesota, the surprise team of the 2019 college football season, is 8-0 for the first time since 1941. They’re 5-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 1961.

Dating back to last year, the Gophers have won 10 games in a row, their longest streak since 1939-42, when they were victorious in 18 straight.

The Gophers have a well-balanced offense that has got better with each week, led by sophomore quarterback Tanner Morgan.

They are also helped by a top-notch offensive line that has kept its QB on his feet. It has allowed only one sack in the last four games, and none in the last three.

Minnesota ranks third in the Big 10 in scoring average (38.4 points per game), total yards per game (429.5) and rushing yards per game (204.5).

On defense, Minny gives up 20 points per game and 238.8 total yards per game. It has held its last four opponents to 17 points or less and under 160 yards passing.

The big knock on Minnesota this year is the strength of schedule. The team has yet to face a ranked team in the AP poll.

They have played the 77th-toughest schedule in the nation, as compared to Penn State, which has played the 7th most difficult slate of opponents.

Penn State vs Minnesota Head-to-Head

The Nittany Lions have won nine of the 14 meetings between the two schools, and five of the last six.

The teams haven’t played since 2016 when Penn State prevailed, 29-26, at home.

Penn State vs Minnesota College Football Predictions

Even though both of these offenses have had spectacular seasons, we think this is going to be a much lower-scoring game than expected.

Both defenses are getting a little bit overlooked entering the big showdown.

It is expected to be a cold day in Minnesota, with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark and snow showers likely as the afternoon goes on. Therefore, we expect a typically hard-fought, Big 10 battle.

Minnesota has a ton of speed on defense, something the other teams Penn State has faced this year have not had. That quickness will be magnified on the fast turf on the Gophers’ home field.

The Nittany Lions have gone under the total the last three times they were listed as a road favorite and that trend will cash in again here today.
