SMU Mustangs Form

Much of the Mustangs’ success this season can be credited to the second-ranked offense in the AAC, averaging 43 points per game.

SMU has shown great balance with a passing game that averages 301.4 yards per game. They also have a running attack that averages 202.8 yards per game.

The team has scored at least 34 points in every game this season and has topped the 40-point barrier six times.

SMU’s defense hasn’t been forced to be too stingy with such a prolific offense and has done an admirable job. They have held opponents to 27.8 points per game.

The Mustangs have been suspect to giving up passing yards in chunks, however, allowing 270 yards through the air per game, which ranks them 11th out of 12 AAC teams.

After winning and covering its first five games of the season, the Mustangs saw the pointspread start to catch up to them.

They have dropped two of their last three games to the spread, including last week’s scare at Houston when it slipped out with a 34-31 win as a 14-point favorite.

SMU is just one of nine teams left in the country with a perfect record. This is the first time since 1982 that the program has been undefeated this late in the season.

Memphis Tigers Form

As good as SMU has been this year, Memphis hasn’t equally as impressive. The Tigers’ only setback came three weeks ago at Temple when they dropped a 30-28 decision as a 4-point favorite in a game they rolled up 493 yards of offense.

The Tigers have been rock-solid on offensive all season, averaging 39.5 points per game, third best in the AAC. Also like SMU, this is a very balanced attack, averaging 282.5 passing yards per game and 188.1 rushing yards per game.

Memphis has the fourth-ranked defense in the conference, allowing 375 yards per game. That has been especially stingy against the pass, giving up just 186 yards a game, second best in the AAC.

Also like SMU, the Tigers may have been looking ahead to this week’s game last Saturday when they barely got by Tulsa, 42-41, as a 10-point favorite.

SMU vs Memphis Head-to-Head

The Tigers have had their way in this series, winning the last five meetings.

Last year, Memphis won 28-18 as an 8-point road favorite and in 2017 it was a shootout as the Tigers prevailed in a wild 66-45 game as a 11-point chalk.

SMU vs Memphis College Football Predictions

While the average fan will be surprised to see the undefeated, 15th team in the country catching a touchdown against a one-loss Memphis team, we think this line is warranted and will lay the points.

First off, the Tigers have the much better defense and matches up well against SMU’s offensive skill players.

Secondly, with ESPN’s College GameDay heading to Memphis for the first time in history the atmosphere will be electric.

The Tigers already hold a very strong home field advantage, going 17-2 straight up and 13-6 against the spread in their last 19 games on this field.

Lay the points as SMU falls from the ranks of the unbeaten.
