As the MLB season winds down every game becomes much more emphasized. It is especially true for the Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Nationals hold a narrow 1.5 game lead for the top NL wildcard spot, meanwhile the Cardinals have a small lead of 2 games for the NL Central crown.
Wednesday afternoon the Washington Nationals travel to take on the Cardinals for the final time in the regular season. This will be game 3 of a 3 game series in St Louis.
The Cardinals won 3 of 4 games vs the Nationals this year already.
Washington Natioanals Predictions
The Nationals are slated to pitch ace and superstar pitcher Max Scherzer in this game. Mad Max is 10-6 on the year with over 200 strikeouts and a 2.65 ERA.
Scherzer has dealt with some injuries this year, however is still one of the most dominant guys to take the mound across the league. Scherzer was roughed up a bit in his latest outing however has been outstanding in his recent outings all together.
Since coming back off the IL in late August the Nationals are 4-1 in his starts. Scherzers K/BB ratio in those games is 33/7. He has dominant control over all his pitches and can strikeout guys at will.

In recent years Scherzer has had success against the Cardinals. He’s started 5 games and gone 38 innings allowing 9 runs and has struck out 48 hitters over that span. He is also 2-0 with no ER over 14 innings in Busch Stadium over that span.
The Nationals are 82-66 on the year and 40-35 on the road this year. As of late they haven’t been playing great as they are 4-6 over the last 10. They haven’t been playing complimentary baseball lately, the offense has been spotty as well as the pitching.
They have bright spots but will need to put it all together as the home stretch is here. On offense youngster Juan Soto leads the team in HRs with 34. Soto is a complete hitter batting nearly .300 and has scored over 100 runs and driven in 105 guys this season.
Another key offensive player and guy that is an underrated superstar is Anthony Rendon. Rendon has a .332 average this year, driven in 118 this year and has 33 HRs this season. Rendon is a key hitter and will be a factor in every game.
The Nats have a duo of speed threats in Trae Turner and Victor Robles. Turner has 32 stolen bags while Robles has 25. Howie Kendrick provides stable offense as well in the middle of the lineup. Kendrick has the ability to find the gaps and drive guys in when needed.
The Nationals won’t need to score bunches of runs with Scherzer on the mound but need to create offense in order to win the game.
St Louis Cardinals Predictions
Opposing Scherzer will be seasoned veteran Adam Wainwright. Wainwright is now in his 13th season as a 38 year old. He is 12-9 with a even 4 ERA. Wainwright isn’t as dominant as he once was but can still get the job done on any given night.
In three starts so far in September Wainwright has a .45 ERA. That’s over three dominant starts in which he’s pitched 20 innings allowing 1 ER. Since July the Cardinals are 11-2 in Wainwrights starts. He pitched vs the Nationals early in the year and 6.1 IP allowing 2 ER and got the win.
Wainwright however has struggled against the Nationals over his career, however pitches very well in Busch Stadium. If Wainwright is locating his mix of fastballs and can get good location with his big curveball Wainwright can minimize the Nationals lineup and get through innings with success.
The Cardinals are 83-66 on the year and sport one of the best home records in the league at 47-28. They are 5-5 in their last 10. The best offensive player for the Cardinals is Paul Goldschmidt.
Three guys in a #postseason race and one going for the home run title.

Goldy has a low average for his standards however has produced at the plate all year. Goldy has 31 HRs, 89 RBIs and leads the team with 141 hits. Paul DeJong and Marcell Ozuna each have 27 HRs this year, both guys have been streaky but they can get hot in a hurry.
Kolten Wong has improved greatly this season and provided great offense with steady base hits and leads the team with 22 bags. Wong also plays gold glove caliber defense at second base.
The offense is rounded up with well-known players like Matt Carpenter and Yadier Molina, both guys can come up with a clutch hit and bring guys in.
The Cardinals have had great bullpen and defense all year. They can rely on the guys in the pen to close out games and with solid players around the diamond make plays to get outs in big time situations.
