Boston Red Sox Predictions

The Red Sox are slated to pitch Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi had an elbow injury to start the year and is 1-0 with an ERA over 6 over 10 starts this year.

Eovaldi was dominant in the playoffs last year, and was paid well the by the Sox in the offseason. Far removed from last year’s playoffs Eovaldi has been spotty and far too inconsistent lately.

Eovaldi hasn’t gone more than 5 innings since returning, and the Red Sox have lost all three of his last starts. In his most recent outings he was touched up by the Giants and Blue Jays giving up 2 HRs in each of those outings.

He also struggled with some command as of late, Eovaldi has had the ability to strike guys out remain but all in all it’s far too inconsistent.

The Red Sox are 80-72 on the season and 43-31 on the road. The Red Sox aren’t playing well as of late. 4-6 in their last 10 and not scoring runs efficiently. A very disappointing and surprising result in terms of the Red Sox record and missing the MLB playoffs after a World Series victory.

The Red Sox have great talent in the lineup and guys that can produce amongst the best in the league. JD Martinez is currently day to day with a groin injury he leads the team with 35 HRs.

The next trio of big bats have all the talent in the world and can get hot quick and be very disruptive for any pitcher. Xander Bogaerts is an MVP candidate has 31 HRs, 109 RBI and hitting over .300. Mookie Betts has 28 HRs and hitting nearly .300, and finally Rafael Devers 30 HRs, 110 RBI, and hitting .311.

Devers is amongst the league’s best in base hits and XBH. Andrew Benintendi, Christian Vazquez and Michael Chavis can pitch in with the power numbers and provide good depth in their lineup.

Tampa Bay Rays Predictions

For the home team Ryan Yarbrough takes the bump. Yarbrough is 11-4 on the year with a 3.78 ERA. Yarbrough is sometimes used after an opener and sometimes used as a starter.

He is scheduled to start this game. He is stingy when it comes to base runners, however when he does allow them they come in bunches. Yarbrough hasn’t been great over his last few outings. The Rays need him here and he will need to pick up his game to push the Rays closer to the MLB playoffs.

He’s pitched in 3 games vs Boston as the primary pitcher and has a 2-0 record with an ERA near 5. He’s given up 4 HRs in 15 innings to the Sox. Yarbrough has shown the ability to pitch very well and can shut down opposing offenses.

However, pitching against a team for the fourth time this year it will be a tough thing to do.

The Rays are 90-63 on the year, and 43-32 at home. They’ve been playing tough teams as of late and are 6-4 in the last 10. The Rays offense has a combination of scrappy and consistent players.

Mainly, Tommy Pham has a 20/20 season under his belt and leads the team in hits. Austin Meadows leads the team in HRs with 32 on the year along with 88 RBI. Meadows has come up with some big hits throughout the season and most recently a game winning HR against the Dodgers a day ago.

Ji Man Choi, Willy Adames, and Avi Garcia each can provide some power for the Rays but they also do a good job hitting and moving guys around.

Travis d’Arnaud has been very good in the batter’s box for the Rays in the second half.

Red Sox vs. Rays MLB Sunday Predictions

This is a tough game as each pitcher has been inconsistent as of late. The Red Sox will be motivated to stop the Rays from gaining ground in the wildcard chase, and the Rays will be eager to gain standing in the race.

Eovaldi hasn’t been overly dominant at all since returning from injury and this could be good for the Rays who have some patient hitters who will take walks.

Yarbrough has the edge in this pitching matchup as he’s proven over the year to be good. As long as Yarbrough minimizes the big hitters of the Red Sox he will have success and work late into the game.

The Rays have good defensive players, mix and match against relief pitching and been a lot more consistent than the Sox over the season.

For these reasons we like the Rays to win this much needed game.
