St Louis Cardinals Form

The Cardinals are sending red hot Jack Flaherty out to start this one. The young righty is 10-8 with an ERA just above 3 on the season.

Since the start of July hes lowered his ERA 2 full runs, 13 straight QS, 102 strikeouts. The Cardinals are 8-5 in these starts. He recently eclipsed the 200 strikeout mark.

Flaherty’s emergence in the second half has been huge for the Cardinals success over the last couple months. He will be up against a depleted Cubs lineup.

He has faced the Cubs four times already this year. The first 3 starts weren’t much to be proud of but the last start was 7 shutout innings in which he struck out 9.

The Cubs lineup will be much different with both Rizzo and Baez unlikely to play in this contest. Flaherty should be in line for another good start.

Cardinals are 84-67 on the year. They are 5-5 in their last 10. The best offensive player for the Cardinals is Paul Goldschmidt.

Goldy has a low average for his standards however has produced at the plate all year. He has 31 HRs, 89 RBIs and leads the team with 141 hits.

Paul DeJong and Marcell Ozuna have 27 and 28 HRs this year, both guys have been streaky but they can get hot in a hurry.

Kolten Wong has improved greatly this season and provided great offense with steady base hits and leads the team with 22 bags. Wong also plays gold glove caliber defense at second base.

The offense is rounded up with well-known players like Matt Carpenter and Yadier Molina, both guys can come up with a clutch hit and bring guys in.

Harrison Bader is called back up with expanded rosters and has been better offensively than he was early on this year. The Cardinals have had great bullpen and defense all year.

They can rely on the guys in the pen to close out games and with solid players around the diamond make plays to get outs in big time situations.

Chicago Cubs Form

The Cubs are sending Kyle Hendricks to start this one. Hendricks is 5 year veteran known for average velocity and throwing a lot of strikes.

This year he is 11-9 with a 3.26 ERA over 28 starts. Hendricks has pitched very well this year and is coming off three very strong outings.

In his last 18 innings hes allowed 3 earned runs. Hendricks has gotten lots of fly ball outs over that span which he has done all year as well.

The scouting report shows Hendricks gets a lot of fly ball outs, generates some whiffs on his slow curveball and his sinking fast ball.

He has been very good at home this year with a 6-2 record and a 1.75 ERA. He has incredibly efficient command and great ratios at home this year as well.

The Cubs are 82-69 this year and 51-25 at home this year. They are 6-4 in their last 10. The Cubs will potentially be without two great players, however.

Javy Baez is day-to-day and reportedly going to be evaluated later in the week for his thumb. Anthony Rizzo is day to day with an ankle sprain and is likely to not play as well.

Despite missing these integral guys the Cubs will post a lineup with offensive talent. Nick Castellanos has been very good since coming over from the Tigers.

Castellanos has 18 doubles and 15 HRs in 44 games as a Cub. He is an extra base hit machine and drive guys in. Kris Bryant has a .287 average with 27 HRs and nearly 80 RBIs on the year.

Team leader in HRs is Kyle Schwarber who is up to 37 on the year. Utility man Ben Zobrist will likely be in the lineup along with Wilson Contreras. Both guys can do different things on offense Zobrist a table setter and Contreras is a guy with power and good average.

St Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs MLB Thursday Tips

The Cubs play extraordinarily well at home and have found a way to win ball games despite injuries. However, the Cardinals have risen to the top of the division for a reason.

Pitching wise the Cardinals are sending arguably the best pitcher of the second half out to start this game. Flaherty has been very consistent as of late and will have a tough matchup with the Cubs likely to play a bunch of lefty bats.

The Cubs need to win this game to start the series off right and move ahead in the standings. Hendricks is good enough to lock down a few innings and the Cubs offense can put some runs together and love to play at home.

For these reasons we like the Cubs to win this game.
