Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets NFL Week 1 Predictions, Preview & Betting Tips

We have NFL Week 1 Predictions for the AFC East clash between the Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets on Sunday September 8, 2019.

A pair of old AFC East rivals will renew their acquaintance Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season as the Buffalo Bills pay a visit to the New York Jets.

The game has a 1:00 EST kickoff time on Sunday, September 8. The early betting line has the Jets listed as 3-point favorites at home with an over/under of 40 points.

As mentioned, these two have a bitter rivalry, meeting twice every year as members of the AFC East. With the New England Patriots dominating the division on a yearly basis, both the Jets and Bills know that they have to beat each other in head-to-head meetings in order to stay in the mix for a playoff spot.

Of course, even when both teams are miles from contention, there’s plenty of animosity between the two teams.

Buffalo Bills Form

For what it’s worth, the Bills had a successful preseason in terms of wins and losses, but that could just mean they have better backups than other teams.

The Buffalo starters were inconsistent at best on both sides of the ball when they actually played during the exhibition season. But that’s not that surprising for a team that went 6-10 last year.

On offense, it’s all about how much Allen improves from his rookie season to his second year. In his defense, Allen wasn’t in a great position to succeed given his supporting cast.

That’s something Buffalo has tried to address, signing over a dozen offensive players during the offseason. It starts with the offensive line, which has received a complete overhaul over the summer, something it desperately needed.

The Bills also brought in veteran receivers like John Brown and Cole Beasley to help Allen. However, the Buffalo backfield is a little long in the tooth, relying on LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore.

Defensively, the Bills didn’t have much to complain about last year, at least considering how little support they got from the offense. Veteran Star Lotulelei and rookie Ed Oliver were brought in to help a defensive line that lost fan-favorite Kyle Williams.

The Buffalo secondary is also one of the best in the league and added even more depth during the offseason. If youngster Tremaine Edmunds can take another step forward, the Bills will also like how they look at linebacker.

New York Jets Form

The Jets haven’t had the best preseason under new head coach Adam Gase. Against the Saints in the most important game of the exhibition season, the Jets were out-gained by over 100 yards and fell behind 10-0 in the 1st quarter with their starters on the field.

Darnold managed to rebound and throw a touchdown pass before leaving the game, but the performance left a little to be desired.

On the bright side, Darnold performed well late in the 2018 season. The Jets also gave him more weapons, signing Le’Veon Bell at running back and slot receiver Jamison Crowder. Darnold also had good chemistry last season with Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa, giving the Jets a solid if unspectacular set of receivers.

Bell, of course, will be expected to be a major difference-maker, and if nothing else, he’ll be a great check down option for Darnold to use. However, the offensive line remains a question mark, which can be problematic with a young quarterback.

Defensively, the Jets are relying on new coordinator Gregg Williams to solve a lot of their problems. Things should be fine inside, as the Jets drafted interior lineman Quinnen Williams third overall, signed middle linebacker C.J. Mosley, and have safety Jamal Adams as the last line of defense.

But, the Jets are lacking dangerous edge rushers and reliable cornerbacks, making them vulnerable against teams with good quarterback play and quality receivers.

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets head-to-head

Last year, the teams didn’t meet until NFL Week 10 when both teams were more or less out of contention. The Bills gave the Jets a 41-10 whipping in the Meadowlands in that game.

However, the Jets got some redemption on their return trip to Buffalo, winning 27-23. That game was actually the first head-to-head meeting between New York quarterback Sam Darnold and Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen, a quarterback matchup that has the potential to define this rivalry for many years to come.

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets NFL Week 1 Predictions

Fortunately for the Jets, the Bills are not a team with the kind of quarterback and receivers who can exploit their weaknesses on defense.

At the moment, there are serious questions about Allen while there’s a little more optimism with Darnold. With his new weapons, particularly Bell, Darnold should have a good game and make the difference.

It’ll be a tight game, but the Jets should be able to win and cover the 3-point spread.
