Detriot Lions Form
There’s no getting around the fact that the Lions have had an ugly preseason. Detroit’s first game was particularly bad, as they lost 31-3 to the Patriots and gained just 93 total yards.
But, things didn’t get much better after that. Coming off a 6-10 season last year, Matt Patricia could find himself on the hot seat if the Lions get off to a slow start in 2019 and finish last in the NFC North once again.
The silver lining is that things can only get better for the Detroit offense in 2019, at least in theory. The Lions dealt with a number of injuries to key skill players last year.
They also struggled to protect Matthew Stafford, who was sacked 40 times and forced to play through a lingering back problem late in the year. However, if Kerryon Johnson can stay healthy, he and C.J. Anderson should be a viable tandem in the backfield.
The Lions will also have a nice trio at receiver with Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, and Danny Amendola, not to mention rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson, so things are looking up if the Detroit offensive line can improve.
Meanwhile, Patricia should be able to turn things around on defense. Having Damon Harrison and A’Shawn Robinson together on the defensive line all season should be helpful.
Patricia also helped to woo former Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers in free agency to give the Detroit pass rush a much-needed upgrade.
If the Lions can win more battles at the line of scrimmage, Patricia’s defense could continue to make strides after playing much better late in 2018.
Arizona Cardinals Form
As for the Cardinals, they are on their third head coach in as many years after Steve Wilkes lasted just one season.
Arizona brought in Kliff Kingsbury, who they believe is the next great offensive innovator despite being fired at Texas Tech last fall. However, it remains to be seen if Kingsbury’s system can succeed against NFL defenses.
Leading Kingsbury’s offense will be first overall pick Kyler Murray. Last year’s Heisman winner is undersized but brings incredible athleticism to the table, not to mention the arm strength to push the ball downfield.

The one thing Murray needs more than anything is an offensive line better than the one Josh Rosen played behind last year. With guys coming back from injuries and multiple additions in free agency, the Cardinals should be able to protect Murray better than they did Rosen last season.
Arizona also has running back David Johnson, who’s productivity went overlooked last year. He’ll help take some pressure off Murray, as will veteran receiver Larry Fitzgerald. But that doesn’t come close to answering the questions everyone has about Murray and Kingsbury’s offense ahead of the season.
On the other side of the ball, the Arizona defense is moving back to a 3-4 scheme, which they used under Bruce Arians in 2017, so it should be familiar to some of the holdovers from the Arians era.
Talent-wise, the Cardinals are loaded in the secondary and have brought in veteran pass rusher Terrell Suggs to complement Chandler Jones, who remains one of the best sack artists in the game.
Detriot Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals Betting Trends
- Cardinals are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
- Cardinals are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Week 1 games.

Detriot Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals head-to-head
The Lions won in Arizona in Week 14 of last season, coming out on top of an ugly 17-3 game. That was the first time the Lions won a game in Arizona since 1993, breaking a streak of eight straight wins the Cardinals had against the Lions at home.
Detroit also kicked off the 2017 season by beating the Cardinals, albeit on their home turf. The Lions will now seek their third straight win over the Cardinals in as many seasons and their second straight road win in Arizona.
Detriot Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals NFL Week 1 Predictions
There’s a good argument for either of these teams getting off to a 1-0 start. However, there are far too many questions regarding the Cardinals since we haven’t seen their real offense during the preseason.
Despite Detroit’s struggles last year, Patricia is still a top-notch defensive coach who should be prepared for what Kingsbury throws at him and able to make adjustments on the fly.
That should be enough to allow the Lions to win and cover the 2.5-point spread against Arizona.
