LA Chargers Form

The Bolts come into Chicago off an absolutely brutal loss for both the team and their bettors last Sunday.

RB Melvin Gordon had not one, but two, TD plunges turned away, including a fumble on the goal line on the game’s final play that prevented a walk-off win for LA. The Titans eventually prevailed 23-20 in a wild finish.

The Chargers fell to 2-5, their worst start since 2015, and all five losses have been by seven points or less. Ouch.

Led by future Hall of Fame QB Philip Rivers, the Chargers offense has struggled this year. In the last six weeks it has only topped 20 points once, and that came in a 30-10 win over winless Miami.

A main culprit has been an offensive line that has looked more like a M.A.S.H. unit as guard Forrest Lamp has now been ruled out the rest of the season. He suffered an ankle injury against the Titans.

He followed two-time Pro Bowl lineman Russell Okung and four-time Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey to the injured reserve list.

Defensively, LA ranks 13th in the league, allowing 333 total yards and 21 points per game.

Chicago Bears Form

After starting the season 3-1, the Bears have been upset in each of their last two games. Three weeks ago in London, the Raiders handed Chicago a 24-21 defeat as 7-point dogs.

It was a game that wasn’t as close as that final score indicates since the Bears were playing catch-up all game long.

Disaster struck last week at home when the Bears came in off a bye and got whipsawed by the Saints, 36-25, as 4-point favorite.

It was a game that was also not as close as the final score indicates since Chicago padded its stats during garbage time in the fourth quarter.

At 3-3, the Bears are way behind in the hunt for the NFC Central crown with the 6-1 Packers in first place. Therefore, it may already be time to start thinking about a wildcard berth.

Defensively, the Bears have been a top 10 unit all season, but last week’s performance against the Tedy Bridgewater-led Saints is a definite concern.

Offensively, starting QB Mitchell Trubisky returned to the line-up last week after missing the previous game. But, he was ineffective to say the least, causing him to get rained on with “boos” from the Bears faithful.

LA Chargers vs. Chicago Bears Head-to-Head

This will be just the 13th all-time meeting between the two franchises and the Bears have won seven of the previous 12 games and and seven of the last eight.

The most recent meeting came in November, 2015, in San Diego when the Chargers won, 22-19, on the strength of 280 passing yards by Rivers.

LA Chargers vs Chicago Bears Predictions

Following last week’s results, these are most certainly two teams that no bettor will want a piece of, but we see some value on the Bears.

Just one week ago, Chicago was laying this same amount of points at home to the Saints, so despite the brutal loss last Sunday, this may be an overreaction.

A wise NFL front office veteran is fond of saying, “Bad offensive lines don’t travel well” and the Chargers may have one of the worst in the league.

They’ll be playing a second straight game on the road in a different time zone. It’s difficult to expect too much to be left in the tank for LA after they’ve played a string of so many close games.

The Bears’ defense will be the best unit on the field, by far, on Sunday and Chicago still owns a very good home field advantage. They have gone 13-6 against the spread in its last 19 games on this field.

Lay the points!
