Carolina Panthers Form

Since losing to the Bucs in Week 2, the Panthers have rattled off three straight wins against the Cardinals, Texans, and Jaguars.

Two of those wins have come on the road, so Carolina has completely turned things around after starting the season 0-2. Those three straight wins have them just a game back of New Orleans in the NFC South.

Of course, after their trip to London and the subsequent bye week, the Panthers face some tricky road games, so it’s important that they extend their winning streak if they want to challenge the Saints for the top spot in the division.

The most surprising part of Carolina’s three-game winning streak is that they’ve done it with Cam Newton on the sidelines and Kyle Allen leading the offense.

The numbers haven’t exactly been overwhelming, at least outside of the four-touchdown performance against Arizona. Allen has just one touchdown pass in the last two weeks and is averaging less than seven yards per pass over that span.

But he’s yet to throw an interception in his three starts, which is keeping the Panthers in good shape. It’s also allowing them to lean on Christian McCaffrey, who ran for 176 yards and had 61 more yards receiving against Jacksonville last week.

Allen has also grown increasingly comfortable with DJ Moore over the last three weeks, helping give Carolina more of a vertical threat.

The Carolina defense also deserves some of the credit for the team’s three-game winning streak. They gave up over 500 yards of offense against Jacksonville, but they also forced three turnovers, including a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.

The Panthers have also generated 20 sacks over five games, meaning they’re able to make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks, even if they’ve allowed 20 or more points in four of their five games.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Form

Bruce Arians and the Bucs have swapped wins and losses all season. They followed up their impressive 55-40 road win over the Rams two weeks ago with a 31-24 loss to the Saints last weekend.

Tampa was out-gained by over 200 yards and needed a touchdown with 13 seconds left in the game to make it a 7-point loss rather than a 14-point loss.

They now sit at 2-3 and have tricky road games against the Titans and Seahawks when they get back from London, which could make the challenge of finding consistency more difficult to achieve.

The good news for the Bucs is that they are fifth in the NFL in points, averaging close to 30 per game. Jameis Winston was able to avoid an interception last week for just the second time all season.

However, his completion percentage was down and he barely surpassed 200 yards. Mike Evans was also held without a reception against New Orleans, which is a huge problem for the Tampa offense.

Despite Chris Godwin emerging as a dependable no. 2 receiver, Evans has been held in check on multiple occasions this season, which is making it hard for the Tampa offense to consistently play at a high level.

Meanwhile, the Tampa defense continues to be unreliable. They allowed four touchdown passes from Teddy Bridgewater last week and allowed 182 passing yards to go to Michael Thomas.

The Week 2 win over Carolina remains the only game in which the Bucs have held their opponents to under 30 points.

Outside of some flashes and a few timely turnovers, the Tampa defense is struggling to play at a high level this year.

Panthers vs Buccaneers Head-to-Head

After the Panthers swept the season series from the Bucs in three straight seasons earlier this decade, Tampa has started to turn the tide in this rivalry.

They’ve now taken four of their last seven meetings with the Panthers, including a surprising 24-17 road win on a Thursday night back in Week 2.

The Buccaneers are losing out on a home game by playing this game in London. But they are hoping to earn a win on neutral ground in order to sweep the season series from Carolina for the second time in four years.

Panthers vs Buccaneers Betting Trends

  • Buccaneers are 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 following a SU loss.
  • Buccaneers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in Week 6.
  • Panthers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs a team with a losing record.
  • Underdog is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
  • Panthers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings in Tampa Bay.

Panthers vs Buccaneers Picks

The Bucs may have taken the first meeting between these teams, but they didn’t face the Carolina offense under Allen. For what it’s worth, they held McCaffrey in check and Winston didn’t throw an interception.

But those two events are unlikely to repeat themselves, especially the way the Panthers have been playing on both sides of the ball.

In a straight-up pick-em, the smart money is on the Panthers getting some redemption for their Week 2 loss.
