New England Patriots Form
It’s hard to imagine any team having an easier road to being 6-0 than the Patriots have had this season. In fairness, they’ve dominated bad teams while barely breaking a sweat.
However, outside of their Week 4 win over the Bills, the five teams they’ve beaten have combined for just six wins on the season.
It will soon get a little more difficult, perhaps as early as Monday night against the Jets, but if the Patriots were a college basketball team, their RPI would be hurt because of their poor strength of schedule.
Against that poor schedule, Tom Brady has excelled, throwing for over 300 yards in three of his last four games, including the Week 3 win over the Jets.
Even with some of New England’s receivers battling injuries, Brady has continued to produce big numbers. However, there could be some hidden flaws in New England’s offense.
For starters, Brady has been sacked seven times over the past two games. He’s also thrown an interception in three straight games after not throwing any in his first three games.
Meanwhile, the Patriots are gaining just 3.5 yards per carry on the season and have just three running plays over 20 yards, which is a little surprising for a team that’s been so dominant.
On the other side of the ball, the New England defense has taken full advantage of playing a weak schedule. The Patriots have allowed no more than 14 points in any game, and both times that they’ve conceded multiple touchdowns, at least one has come from the opposing defense.
The New England defense has also amassed 16 takeaways this season, including 10 in the last three games. However, part of that could be due to facing bad teams and a string of either inexperienced or subpar quarterbacks.
New York Jets Form
The Jets are beyond ecstatic to finally have their first win of the season, knocking off the Cowboys 24-22 last week.
They had to withstand a late comeback from Dallas, but the New York defense came up with a stop on a 2-point conversion in the final minute to secure the win.
At 1-4, the odds are against the Jets being in the playoff hunt the second half of the season. However, after they play the Patriots, the Jets will play six of their next seven games against teams that also have losing records, so there is a glimmer of hope.
It’s no coincidence that the Jets got their first win after quarterback Sam Darnold finally made his return from mono. Darnold threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns with his most important play being a 92-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson.
Anderson has been a non-factor with the team’s backup quarterbacks, but with Darnold back, he gives the Jets a much-needed deep threat who can keep teams from stacking the box against running back Le’Veon Bell.
In other words, Darnold’s return should help to open up the offense and create more opportunities for the playmakers around him.
The bigger question, perhaps, is if the New York defense will benefit from getting Darnold back. Surely, there will be fewer 3 and outs by the New York offense, giving the defense more time to rest and taking some of the pressure off them.
The Jets have also been hurt by injuries, most notably to linebacker C.J. Moseley, who hasn’t played since Week 1 due to injury. He could be a huge addition if he’s able to rejoin the defense this week.
Patriots vs Jets Head-to-Head
There’s certainly no lack of familiarity or animosity between these two teams. Like most rivalries between New York and New England teams, there’s a great deal of disdain between both the players and fanbases.
When these teams met in Week 3, the Patriots handled the Jets 30-14, although they failed to cover the 21-point spread. With Luke Falk starting at quarterback, the Jets managed just 105 total yards and had both of their touchdowns scored by the defense after New England had taken a 30-0 lead.
With the win, the Patriots now have a seven-game winning streak over the Jets. The Jets have only two wins over New England in their last 17 attempts, although both have come at home.
Patriots vs Jets NFL Picks & NFL Predictions
Is one good game with Darnold back enough to believe in the Jets? Actually, it is. The Patriots struggled on the road against the Bills a few weeks back and they’ll have another hostile environment against a division rival to deal with on Monday.
The Jets may not pull off the upset but there’s a good chance they make the Patriots work and beat the 10-point spread.
