Pittsburgh Steelers Form

Things went from bad to worse last Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers regarding the quarterback position.

After losing veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger to a season-ending injury in Week 2, back-up Mason Rudolph was the recipient of a vicious hit during a loss to rival Baltimore, knocking him out of the game.

The dizzy Rudolph barely walked off the field under his own power and is not expected to start this week.

So, the prized franchise will most likely be sending out Devlin Hodges as its starting QB on Sunday night.

Hodges, an undrafted rookie who wasn’t with the team in training camp, played admirably well under the circumstances on Sunday. It resulted in an OT loss to the Ravens in a key AFC North showdown.

Hodges won the 2018 Walter Payton Award and in his prolific career threw for 14,584 yards, 111 TDs while scrambling for 1,017 yards and 17 touchdowns.

But, getting a start on the road for Sunday Night Football is a huge step up in class. Not helping matters for Hodges is the fact that the Steelers running game has shown zero consistency, averaging a paltry 67 yards per game, which ranks the team 29th in the league.

Defensively, the Steelers have also not played well and injuries are taking a toll. Take away the 27-3 rout of winless Cincinnati on Monday Night Football a few weeks ago and the Pittsburgh stop unit has allowed an average of 27.8 points per game and 139 rushing yards per game.

The Steel Curtain, it is not.

The bottom line: If the Steelers fall to 1-5 with a loss this week, they will head into next week’s bye with little chance of making the playoffs.

LA Chargers Form

The Chargers were a chic pick to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl before the season started, but at this point they may struggle to make the NFL playoffs.

Following an unimpressive season-opening victory over the Colts, who started a back-up QB, the Bolts have lost three of their last four games.

That includes a home setback last week to the previously winless Denver Broncos, 20-13, as a 5-point favorite.

The team’s only win during the four-game stretch came against the dreadful and winless Miami Dolphins.

Two games back in the AFC West race, LA needs a win badly here at home. But, like the Steelers, the injuries are mounting.

Especially on the defensive side of the ball, where the team ranks 24th and 26th in rushing and passing success rate defense, respectively.

On the offensive side of the ball, veteran QB Phillip Rivers is still slinging it. The team has been held to 20 points or less in three of its five games this season, which is not a formula for success in today’s NFL.

The Chargers also have one of the worst — if not THE worst — home field advantages in the league since it plays in a soccer stadium.

They usually have many fans rooting for the visitor as it does wearing the powder blue and yellow Chargers colors.

That certainly won’t change this week with the popular Steelers in town.

Steelers vs. Chargers Head-to-Head

These two teams played a wild game in December of last season during the Chargers’ impressive finish.

LA went to Pittsburgh as a three-point underdog and left town with a 33-30 win after falling behind 23-7 at the half.

Steelers vs Chargers Picks

Yes, much has changed since the last time these two teams met on December 2, 2018.

The over/under in that game was 53.5 and it went sailing over the total.

Now, 10 months later, we have a total of 41.

We think that’s way too much of an overreaction, so we’ll play the over, and hope both of these banged-up defenses continue to struggle.

As seen from his college statistics, Hodges isn’t afraid to throw the ball around the yard and if the pressure is too much for him under the Sunday Night lights and he turns it over, that will be a good thing for our over bet.
