Houston Texans Form
The Texans are no doubt on Cloud 9 after their win in Kansas City last week. Deshaun Watson and the offense took advantage of a porous Kansas City defense.
While the Houston defense managed to shut the door on Patrick Mahomes and company in the second half on their way to a 31-24 win.
Since losing their season-opener to the Saints in heart-breaking fashion, the Texans have responded with four wins in their last five games. They can take firm control of the AFC South if they can keep it going this week.
The Houston offense was a little up and down during the first month of the season. But they’ve posted 84 points over their last two games, albeit against the Falcons and Chiefs – owners of two of the most suspect defenses in the NFL.
In addition to playing poor defensive teams, the Houston offensive line has been key to the turnaround. Watson was sacked 18 times in the first four games of the season but hasn’t been sacked in two straight games.
When Watson gets a little time in the pocket, he can be lethal. Considering the receiving targets at his disposal, most notably DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller.
On top of that, the Texans are gaining five yards per rush on the ground, giving their offense impressive balance.
Defensively, the Texans aren’t quite as sound, allowing 46 points over their last two games despite getting a win on both occasions. However, they were able to throw Mahomes off his rhythm last week while also taking away the Kansas City running game.
The numbers say that Houston has conceded at least 20 points in four of their six games. But, if the offense can continue to produce at such a high level the defense becomes less of a concern for the Texans.
Indianapolis Colts Form
Much like the Texans, the Colts are coming off an impressive road win over the Chiefs in their last game. Although, they had a bye last week to enjoy the win and rest up.
As a result, they are one game back of the Texans in the win column but could leapfrog Houston and take over first place in the AFC South with a win.
Oddly enough, the Colts had a disappointing home loss to the Raiders right before that win over the Chiefs. Indy could be kicking themselves for that loss to Oakland later in the season.
But they have a chance to make up for it with four of their next five games at home, starting with Sunday’s date with the Texans.
Defensively, the Colts were impressive in their win over the Chiefs, helping create a blueprint for the Texans the following week. However, strong defense hasn’t exactly been the norm for the Colts this season.
They were ripped apart by the Raiders and were vulnerable through the air against the Falcons. The good news is that coming off the bye, the Colts should be in better shape health-wise. Darius Leonard is finally ready to return after being out since Week 2 with a concussion.
On the offensive side of the ball, Jacoby Brissett has been fine, but Indy is usually reliant on their rushing attack setting the tone.
Marlon Mack is gaining 4.7 yards per carry behind a strong offensive line, which is a big reason why Brissett has only been sacked six times in five games.
As long as they can run the ball and keep Brissett protected, the Colts have a chance.
Texans vs Colts Head-to-Head
These teams battled it out for the AFC South crown last year with the Texans edging out the Colts by a game. Of course, the two teams met in the Wild Card Round of the playoff when the Colts won 21-7 on the road.
Indianapolis has won four of the five head-to-head meetings between the two teams over the past two years, continuing their domination over Houston, winning 27 of the 35 all-time meetings.
On the other hand, the Texans have actually won three of their last four trips to Indianapolis, including a 37-34 overtime thriller last season.
Texans vs Colts NFL Picks & NFL Betting Predictions
After walking into Kansas City last week, it’s hard to go against the Texans to come away with another big road win. Even with Leonard back, the Indy defense could be vulnerable against an offense with as many dynamic weapons as Houston.
If the scoring gets into the high 20s or 30s, the Colts could have trouble keeping up, making the Texans as road underdogs the best option in this game.
