Controversy ended Game 3
St Louis Blues were right to be angry at the ending to Game Three of the series with the Sharks. Everybody in attendance had noticed, and the players and staff in the dugouts knew it too; there was a hand pass in the lead up to the overtime goal that clinched the Sharks lead.
It almost seemed impossible to believe that all four of the officials that were gathered on the ice could miss it, but they did and Erik Karlsson’s goal five minutes into overtime was enough to give them the win.
It has been a miserable post-season for refereeing decisions, but this was the lowest point to date. Since the video review process doesn’t look at hand passes, there wasn’t anything that could be done. However, it has already been touted that this rule could next season be changed; but that’s no good to the Blues this season.
The incident occurred when a loose puck was sent into the air off St Louis’ Colton Parayko; it struck Meier’s chest before he swatted it with his right glove. From there, the puck found its way to Gustav Nyquist, who calmly played Karlsson in to strike a sweet puck past the oncoming Jordan Binnington.
The Sharks celebrated, and as the Blues started reminiscing with the officials, the San Jose players left the ice. Once the decision was made final, the officials followed, but they were peppered with cans and cups as they departed; as the anger from the Blues fans was felt.
Sharks could take a commanding lead
The Sharks had put themselves into a commanding position earlier on in the game, as they ended the first period 2-0 ahead. However, what ensued was some of the wildest hockey of the season. St Louis’ Alexander Steen put them back in with a chance with over one minute played before Joe Thornton got his second of the game a few seconds later.
Vladimir Tarasenko hammered in his first goal since Game Four against the Stars to make the scores 3-2 before Perron scored twice to give the Blues a 4-3 lead.
However, the Sharks are peppered with playoff quality, and one of those players took their chance when it arrived. Binnington’s goal had been hammered ever since San Jose fell behind, only for the rookie keeper to make save after save.
However, step forward Logan Couture to put San Jose back on terms and force the overtime period. The game was playoff hockey at its best, and let’s hopes for more.
