Stanley Cup Game 5 Preview

When the St. Louis Blues were comprehensively beaten on their own ice in Game Three of the series after their famous win in the second game they would have been thinking that maybe their chance had gone. However, they have ensured that the Bruins have to go to that level above after once against levelling the series following a 4-2 victory.

However, this win could be far more significant than people think. The 7-2 defeat in Game Three wasn’t only their worst performance of the playoffs, but possibly the entire season.

The character that they showed in the following game last time out was something that Blue’s fans would be forgiven for thinking as uncharacteristic. This Blues team is unlike any in recent memory.

They have character and the ability to bounce back from the toughest of blows. Before Game Three fans’ had begun to wonder what if? Could this end our misery? The answer was overwhelming, but now that hope is reignited.

Game 3 was soon forgotten about after Ryan O’Reilly scored within 50 seconds of the start of the game before he appeared again to score the game-winning goal in the third period. The Bruins may have been forgiven for thinking that it was a matter of when they wrap up the series and not if. But now the question whether they will win the series at all remains in doubt, especially if the Blues can repeat this performance for the remainder of the series.

However, judging from the series so far that seems unlikely, but the prospect of sipping from the prized chalice is a mere two games away for either of these sides now, and it’s about who shows up when it matters.

The resilience of the Blues could be the overriding factor that ensures that the narrative for this Stanley Cup is about them. Since the 1st of January, the Blues only had two regular season losing streaks.

In the opening rounds of the playoffs, they have bounced back from losing positions against both Winnipeg and Dallas to advance. The forceful rushes to the net in Monday’s game are what killed the Bruins. They couldn’t deal with them. That was the case for O’Reilly’s goals and Vladimir Pietrangelo’s rebound effort also.

It was must-win for the Blues on Monday, and their never-say-die attitude was evident by O’Reilly beating the Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy in a bum rush to score the match-winning goal. Whisper it quietly, but the Blues could be destined to be the team celebrating at the end of this series.

Stanley Cup Game 5 Predictions

While the Blues were superb on Monday evening, it will take a performance from the level above if they are to get the win again in Boston.

The Blues may outlast the Bruins, but Game Five will be a Boston win; ensuring that St. Louis must do it the hard way.
