Stanley Cup Game 6 Preview
History beckons for the Blues, as they are now just the sole win away from hoisting the Stanley Cup in front of their home fans after a momentum-stealing 2-1 victory on Thursday evening in Boston.
The Bruins had returned back to their home ice with a perfect opportunity to restore their lead after a 4-2 defeat in St. Louis. Hopes were high after Zdeno Chara was passed fit to play after refusing to succumb to a jaw injury that threatened to rule him out.
However, the problems remained within the Bruins first-line during regular play, and once again they struggled to get a handle on the game. Jordan Binnington was also in inspired form for the Blues as he saved 38 of the 39 shots that he faced.
Not for the first time the NHL season, the officials were once again at the centre of attention and made strange calls throughout the evening. Zach Sanford was lucky to get away with a couple of high hits on Tyler Bozak and Torey Krug; while he also got away with a blatant trip on Noel Acciari, which ultimately was the deciding moment of the game as it was in the build-up for the match-winning moment.
This shouldn’t take the gloss of the Blues victory, or encourage the Bruins to believe they played well. Boston were lifeless throughout the evening, and if they had walked away with the win, it would have been a travesty. But, undoubtedly, the officials played their part, and the home fans let them hear their frustrations.
There was little doubt about the star of the show; as Binnington had the best game of his young NHL career. Much of the headlines will be given to the incident on Bozak, but the moments that the 25-year-old produced on numerous occasions to ensure the win for the Blues in the final stages was the overwhelming take away from the game.
He was ultimately beaten on a Jake DeBrusk goal on a delayed penalty. The Blues record, when being a man down, has been remarkable since conceding four goals in game three. However, since that point, the Blues haven’t conceded a goal up until last night when being a man down.
The Bruins would be worried by their inabilities within the five-on-five competition. Especially since the form of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak has plummeted over recent games. If this problem isn’t resolved, then we could be looking at crowing new Stanley Cup champions on Sunday.
