Two of the best teams play in the Champions League quarter-finals in April and we have Ajax vs Juventus tips.
One of the more intriguing fixtures of the quarter-final stages of the Champions League sees the runaway leaders of Serie A travel to the Netherlands to take on a young and exciting Ajax side.
Can Cristiano Ronaldo keep his team on track to win a first European title since the 1995-96 season?
April 16, 2019 @ Juventus Stadium
Ajax surprised the whole of Europe with their result in the last round, as they knocked out the three-time reigning champions Real Madrid in emphatic fashion.
The Dutch side lost the first leg at the Amsterdam Arena by two goals to one, but it was the actions of Sergio Ramos that perfectly summed up Madrid’s attitude to the tie at that point.
The Spaniard deliberately received a yellow card to miss the second leg; allowing him to play in the later rounds without the risk of suspension. This complacency was the catalyst for the Ajax recovery in the Santiago Bernabeu.
Some bookmakers were offering prices as high as +2000 for Ajax to qualify. The Dutch side was simply magnificent in the Spanish capital and played in a fashion that no Ajax team have in over 20 years.
First-half goals from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres put Ajax in complete control. Before man of the match on the night Dusan Tadic and Lasse Schone found the net in the second half to ensure their passage into the next round. Juventus will be wary of the European form that Ajax have, as the Madrid first leg was their only defeat in the competition this season.
The Champions League is the one trophy that has eluded Italian giants Juventus in this golden era of dominance. Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival at the club was the signal that this is the trophy that they are prioritising this season, and he proved his worth in the last round as he came to the rescue when Juventus were on the verge of being knocked out by Atletico Madrid.
Juventus trailed 2-0 heading back to Italy, after Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin found the net in the last 20 minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. However, in the return leg, Ronaldo finally arrived in the competition in the colours of Juventus.
A sublime performance and a hat-trick at the Allianz Stadium meant that his new club were able to run out 3-0 winners on the night; and 3-2 on aggregate.
Juventus have been inconsistent throughout the competition so far, and have lost on three occasions. Their other two defeats coming at the hands of Manchester United and Young Boys in the group stage. The complacently will undoubtedly be a worry for Massimiliano Allegri, who will be hoping to avoid the same fate as Real Madrid.
Ajax vs Juventus Tips
If you were to offer Juventus this fixture for a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League at the beginning of the season, they would have been overjoyed. However, following Ajax’s performance against Real Madrid, they may have been hoping to avoid the talented young Dutch side.
Juventus are inconsistent, and still feel like they are a work in progress, with Allegri still working out how to get the best out of Ronaldo and Dybala in the same team.
The first leg in Amsterdam is likely to be cagey, but over the two legs, the Italian side will get the result they need. However, they won’t strike fear into the likes of Manchester City and Barcelona.
