The Premier League finally returns, and the season kicks off with the current champions of Europe taking on top-flight newcomers Norwich City at Anfield.

Anything other than a defeat would be a remarkable achievement for the Canaries, while anything other than a win would be classed as a disappointment for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool Form & News

Liverpool were desperately unlucky last season not to have won their first Premier League title. They ended the season with one of the highest points tally’s in Premier League history, and only lost once all season.

That defeat was a crucial moment in the season, with their 2-1 defeat against Manchester City in January the ultimate deciding factor in the destination of the title.

The Reds weren’t to end the season empty-handed, however, as they reigned supreme in Madrid to win the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

However, they have endured a tricky preseason and have only won once in their last four outings. The fitness of their star attacking trio will be a concern for Klopp, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all taking part in either the Copa America or African Cup of Nations over the summer.

It goes without saying, but without their forward three, this Liverpool side isn’t the same animal. Klopp will be hoping that they remain fit throughout the season. Otherwise, their title chances could be over before they even start.

Norwich City Form & News

Daniel Farke has done a remarkable job in leading Norwich to the Promised Land. When he took over the Canaries were the favourites for relegation, but in the face of that, he led them to the Premier League as Championship champions.

No team got near to scoring the 93 goals that City registered last season, while Teemu Pukki’s debut campaign at the club was nothing short of outstanding. The Finnish international scored 29 goals and was awarded the player of the season in the division, and he will once again lead the line in their survival bid.

The worry with Norwich would be their defensive record. None of the top four in the Championship conceded more than the Canaries total of 57 last season, and their approach of outscoring the opposition could be their downfall in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see how they set up against a Liverpool side that have been unbeaten at home in the previous two seasons, as it would be improbable to fancy their chances if they attack Liverpool because the Reds would just carve them open with ease on the counter-attack.

Liverpool vs Norwich City head-to-head stats

Liverpool holds the clear advantage in the overall record, as they have won on 35 occasions compared to Norwich’s 14. There have also been 15 draws between the teams.

The last meeting between the sides came in 2016, and Liverpool won the compelling match 5-4. The last win in this match for the Canaries came in 1994 when a Jeremy Goss goal gave them a 1-0 win at Anfield.
