Both teams have a lot to lose, but Arsenal more so. The Gunners have been trying to force their way into the Premier League’s top four all season. However, they fell just short in their attempt, and a fifth-place finish means that their only way to be playing in the Champions League next season now hinges on a win in the Europa League final.
The Gunners have enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance under Unai Emery this season, but for how good they have played, Champions League qualification would have been the minimum requirement for the Spaniard.
The Gunners have been brilliant in this competition, and have undoubtedly had a much tougher route to the final that their London opponents.
Their comprehensive wins over Napoli and Valencia were unexpectedly comfortable for Arsenal; with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s form being the decisive factor in the latter. The Gabon international scored a hat-trick in the second leg of their clash with the Spanish side at the Mestalla, and the forward will need to be at his dazzling best once again if they are to beat Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Sarri himself has faced a baptism of fire since taking the hot seat at Stamford Bridge. The expectation was that the former Napoli boss was going to reinvent this Chelsea team and make them a team that was easy on the eye to watch.
However, what has really transpired is the Italian giving the Blues fans headaches from the confusion that they have suffered through questionable managerial decisions and tactics. Sarri’s decision to continually opt for Pedro or Willian on the wing as opposed to Callum Hudson-Odoi has been strange, while the decision to stick with Jorginho while having the best defensive midfielder in the world in N’golo Kante playing out of his position alongside him has not helped Sarri’s case.
The Europa League final could effectively decide whether Sarri will lead the Blues into next season or not. A defeat against the fierce North London rivals could spell the end to his tenure; with a possible return to Italy a likely destination for Sarri should his English nightmare end.
Chelsea’s decision to play a post-season friendly in the USA has also backfired miserably; with Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffering an Achilles injury, which means he will miss the final.
In a season full of questionable decisions, Chelsea fans will be hoping that the final goes their way. But, they won’t be full of hope.
Europa League Final Predictions
The Europa League final has always been an entertaining occasion, and this will be no different. Chelsea and Arsenal will both feel that they are capable of scoring, and both sides have vulnerabilities at the back; which will make for pleasant viewing for the neutrals.
However, Arsenal have a lot more riding on the game, and their big game players like Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette will ensure that the Emirates will see Champions League football next season.
