Women’s World Cup Predictions, Picks & Preview – USA vs Netherlands

We have Women’s World Cup Predictions for the football final on Sunday between the USA vs Netherlands.

It has been an incredible month of action showcasing the best women’s footballers on the planet. There have been tears and tantrums, but the skill and entertainment have outweighed anything else.

However, only two teams remain, and few would complain that the best two sides of the entire tournament are the two that will be competing in the final of the competition.

Team USA Form

The USA will be looking for a record-extending fourth success in the competition, and come into the final as the reigning champions. However, this has been a stern test of their abilities and has been a more gruelling assignment.

The US came into the competition as the overwhelming favourites to retain their trophy, and they have beaten the best sides in the world on route to this stage. Their semi-final clash was the closest that anybody has come to beating them, and they did ride their luck.

Christen Press had put the USA ahead, but Ellen White equalled for England five minutes later. However, the dynamic Alex Morgan headed the Americans back ahead following some smart movement around the English backline.

The second half was dominated by the English, and after VAR had ruled out a second equaliser due to White being narrowly offside, the US conceded a penalty. Fortunately, their luck was in again as the spot kick from Steph Houghton with five minutes remaining was tame.

This means that the US will compete in the final after already overcoming the Lionesses and France, as well as beating the other semi-finalists Sweden in the group stage. The signs are good for the US to be celebrating another World Cup success in Lyon on Sunday evening.

Team Netherlands Form

However, the Dutch are no slouches and will present a challenge that the US have not encountered thus far. The US are used to overpowering their opponents in the air, but the Dutch will ensure that this isn’t the case in the final.

The Netherlands have scored 12 goals with headers in the competition; more than another team. The current European champions will be competing in their first ever World Cup final, and strangely enough, they haven’t had to play to anywhere near the level that we saw in their 2017 success to get this far.

After topping Group D, they overcame Japan in fortunate fashion as the Japanese had a perfectly acceptable goal disallowed in the final moments of the game. Their quarterfinal clash with Italy was far more straight forward as they overcome the surprise package 2-0.

Undoubtedly their stiffest test, however, came last time out against Sweden. The Swedish style of play stifled the Dutch, and they were unable to pass the ball away in the fashion that they like to. The match entered an additional period of 30 minutes, and for the first time in the game the Dutch managed to work a chance; Jackie Goenen didn’t need a second opportunity.

She drove her effort into the bottom left-hand corner past the helpless Swedish keeper, and the Dutch were in the final.

Women’s World Cup Predictions

This could be a more challenging game than the US believes. The Dutch strength in the air combined with the poor defensive ability of the American’s from corners and free-kicks means that the Netherlands have a chance should they keep the USA from scoring.

However, the quality that America has in Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe means that it is almost impossible to think that the US won’t score, and for that reason, they will cement their place in the history books.
