UFC 239 Preview – Jones vs Santos

Thiago Santos has earned his title shot by winning his last four; including three in the Light Heavyweight division. However, he will remain as the massive outsider to beat Jon Jones.

Jones will be high on confidence after proving his credentials once again by beating Anthony Smith at UFC 235 in March, prior to that he had beaten Alexander Gustafsson in December.

It has been a whirlwind two years for Jones following his win over Daniel Cormier in July 2017. Following his knockout victory in the third round and being awarded the ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus, he was quick to turn his sights to former UFC and present WWE employee Brock Lesnar.

A match between was reportedly in the works, and it was set to be a money-spinning event for UFC. However, those plans were quickly derailed when Jones was flagged for a potential doping violation.

He was subsequently found to have steroids in his system, and he was placed on the suspension list. Once it was announced that this had indeed been the case, he was stripped of the Light Heavyweight Championship that he had won against Cormier and the result of the match was a non-contest.

After serving his ban, he returned to face Gustafsson for the vacant title in December 2018. Jones won in the third round by TKO, before going onto retaining his title against Anthony Smith at UFC 235.

Jones was dominant with his offensive flurry, and despite being deducted points for illegal knees, he was victorious by a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards.

Since being defeated by David Branch in a vicious first-round knockout in April 2018, Santos has been in excellent form by winning four straight encounters. The first of these came by unanimous decision against Kevin Holland, before beating Eryk Anders in the Fight of the Night at UFC Fight Night 137.

A flurry of offensive left Anders struggling to get to his corner at the end of the third round, and the referee awarded the victory to Santos. He won consecutive Fight of the Night accolades at the UFC 231 event, as Santos won by a second round knock out against Jimi Manuwa in December.

This encounter also meant that he tied for the most bouts in one calendar year. He showcased all his ability in his last fight when he beat Jan Blachowicz with a TKO in the third round.

UFC 239 Predictions – Jones vs Santos

While Santos has been in excellent condition recently, a matchup against Jones is something that he would never have faced before.

Jones is a step up from the competitors that he has beaten previously and while he will try and take the fight to Jones, it seems that the champion will pick him apart and the favourite will walk out with his title. But, it has the potential to be a classic.
