UFC 242 Title Fight Preview: Khabib vs. Poirier
Khabib is one of the most feared fighters on the planet, but Dustin Poirier has stepped up to answer the challenge of the undefeated Russian.
Khabib’s impeccable record reads 27-0-0, with his last bout certainly the one that put him on the global stage. His last appearance in the octagon came in 2018 against Conor McGregor, and Khabib ruthless beat the Irishman by submission in the fourth round. However, Poirier offers a slightly different task.

The American has been victorious on his last four outings in UFC; including a unanimous victory over Max Holloway in his last bout.
His only blemish came against Eddie Alvarez, which saw the fight classed as a non-contest due to a flurry of illegal knees by Alvarez.
The two had a rematch a year later, and Poirier settled any doubts over his quality with a brutal TKO in the second round. In between those bouts, he overcame Anthony Pettis and Justin Gaethje.
All three of those bouts were won by TKO, with the victory over Holloway being the only time he has gone the distance in his last five fights.
Poirier, like Khabib, has shared the octagon with McGregor. But, unlike his UFC 242 opponent, he was unable to beat the Irishman.
Regardless, Poirier holds a brilliant record of nine wins in his last eleven bouts and his tendency to look for a brawl could make this a fight of the year contender.

However, Khabib’s ability to work down his opponents and create opportunities for him to utilise has remained a pattern throughout his career.
The victory last time out against McGregor was his true arrival on the global stage, and he highlighted that he is more than happy to brawl before taking the fight to the ground.
This will be the first time we will see Khabib back in the octagon since that night in Las Vegas, as both fighters were handed lengthy bans and hefty fines.
Whether Khabib will be rusty is an unknown quantity that makes this fight unmissable, but it’s unlikely that he will miss out on an opportunity to unify the division and set up a possible money-spinning rematch with McGregor further down the line.

UFC 242 Title Fight Predictions: Khabib vs. Poirier
There aren’t many points that you can think of which will hand Poirier a level of confidence. The only one that stands out is the American taking a leaf out of the book of Alexander Gustafsson and try and unsettle the Russian from the first second.
However, it’s unlikely that Khabib will be rattled by a quickstart. Khabib is one of the savviest fighters in the UFC and the gulf in quality is massive between the two.
It’s difficult seeing this fight go the distance, as Khabib will wear down Poirier before making the decisive blow.
