2019 US Open Tennis Men’s Predictions: Big Three Dominance

It remains unlikely that the top three players in the world will see their era of dominance breached in the final Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic has already won two of the Grand Slams this season, while Rafael Nadal won his French Open title again.

Roger Federer proved at Wimbledon that age is just a number, and he came within one point of topping Djokovic. Their dominance in tennis will never be matched. Since 2003, these three players have won 55 out of a possible 65 Grand Slams.

Djokovic would be the preference out of the three to maintain his excellent season with another US Open success. He won the same event last year when he beat Juan Martin del Potro in the final.

Nadal isn’t a massive fan of the courts at the US Open. He has tasted success on the hard courts in the States, but it would be hard to see him beating Djokovic at Flushing Meadows.

Federer hasn’t won the US Open since 2008, which was the fifth straight year he had won the competition. However, while he has form on this surface, the question remains about his fitness.

How much his Wimbledon run has taken out of him could be crucial in deciding how far he could go this time around. It is always difficult to bet against Federer, but this hasn’t been his favourite Grand Slam event over the past couple of years.

2019 US Open Tennis Men’s Predictions: Surprise Contenders

Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the charge behind the big three, and he has enjoyed an excellent season so far. He made history when he became the first male Greek player to win a junior Grand Slam event, and the last couple of years has seen him rise through the ranks into a possible contender.

He won his first ATP match in 2017, while he also became the youngest player to reach four top ten ranked players in a single competition at the Canadian Open. Tsisipas began this season by reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open before being beaten by Nadal.

On that run to the semi’s, he also knocked out Federer, which highlights that he has the ability to cause a shock in the US Open.

Alexander Zverev seems to be a player that everybody is talking about at the moment, but his Grand Slam performances have let him down. He has reached two quarter-finals before being easily beaten by Dominic Thiem and Djokovic in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Last season he ended the campaign by beating the number one ranked player for the first time in his career, which also meant he became the first German player since Boris Becker to win the season-ending championship.

Whether he can transfer that performance level into Grand Slam events remains to be seen, but if he can, then he will have a chance.

2019 US Open Tennis Men’s Predictions: Tournament Tips

It is incredibly hard to look past Djokovic. The Serb has enjoyed a fantastic season, and this would be the perfect way to end his Grand Slam season. His dedication to winning is something that the younger players should aspire to.

There could also be money to be made in an each-way bet on Tsitsipas. Out of the NextGen players, he is certainly the one that has the best realistic chance.
